While this seems unlikely, it is entirely possible if someone has subscribed another mailing list to this list, causing that other list to act as a remailer. In that case, attempts to unsub this list will fail because subscribers of that other list are not subscribed to the GenWeb list. No remailers to this list are authorized without my permission and I have not given permission. If you believe you might be getting a message from the GenWeb mailing list by way of some other mailing list, please send me a recent GenWeb message, complete with all the header information. This will help us find the system that is forwarding the messages. In most cases, however, people have subscribed to this list after accessing one of those genealogy index sites whose sponsor has programmed a "mailto:" link to the GenWeb's host listserver. In any case, upon being subscribed, everyone should get a message from the listserver confirming the subscription and giving directions for unsubscribing. This message will also confirm the name a user has been subscribed under. Thanks for your patience while we continue to monitor this situation. BroderBund's BannerBlue division, the makers of Family Tree Maker, plans to ship FTM version 4.0 on June 10. According to the FTM web site , the new publishing features of FTM include GenWeb-like features. InterneTree(TM) uses state-of-the-art Java(TM) technology to display dynamic views of your family tree on your home page at Family Tree Maker Online. You, your relatives, and other Internet users can see your entire tree at once. Just select any person in your tree to see all their ancestors and descendants. Select another person, and the tree instantly changes the display to this person's branches. Dick Eastman had more information in last week's Genealogy Newsletter when he quoted from BroderBund's news release (apparently not yet available on their own Web site). Online Sharing --InterneTree (TM) uses state-of-the-art Java(TM) technology to display your family tree graphically on your home page at Family Tree Maker Online. Visitors to your home page can click any person in the tree and watch as the InterneTree instantly updates the screen to show both ancestors and descendants of that individual. Online Research --Internet FamilyFinder (TM) radically reduces the time it takes to find valuable genealogy information on the Internet. This cutting-edge search engine is fine-tuned especially for genealogy name searches. It indexes over 15 thousand sites worldwide, encompasses approximately 20 million names, and is growing quickly. --Internet FamilyFinder Agents (TM) are sophisticated software programs that automatically roam the Internet looking for genealogy information. Instead of using the Internet FamilyFinder yourself and doing name searches one by one, you can charter a free FamilyFinder Agent to do the work for you. Some of this sounds like what we've been talking about on this mailing list for three years now. If anyone has more information about this project, please post it to the GenWeb mailing list. Meanwhile, I am trying to get more information from the BroderBund programming team. Stay tuned. Cheers, Gary *************************************************************************** *Gary B. Jon Brinkmann wrote about Titanic messages being sent through various genealogy mailing lists. The Titanic message is an example of very efficient spamming; they send their intrusive message to a mailing list rather than to a group of individuals and they don't even care where it goes. Even if you follow the instructions to remove your address from their records, it won't work because their record contains not your address but the mailing list address. I think we will see more and more of this type of junk e-mail. Mailing list managers have several options to prevent this kind of attack, including making the list moderated, requiring a moderator to approve a message before it's posted, or restricting send access to properly subscribed addresses. Both of these tactics are inconvenient to both managers and users. However, if the pain level rises, we will consider these steps. Further, as a list grows in numbers (genweb is now over 800 names), the noise level (administrative messages, complaints, etc.) increases relative to the signal level (message content on the main topic). Our list has had a negative signal-to-noise ratio lately, including this noise message. I plead for tolerance and understanding to help us maintain this useful channel; tolerance of others' mistakes and understanding of what's going on in the world of electronic mail. Also, we welcome on-topic postings from every subscriber, including the many, the silent. Cheers, Gary *************************************************************************** *Gary B. In order to ensure your success, here are some tips: Typing is preferred for legibility and double spacing is great. Leave lots of white space on your letter for clerks to write a quick answer back to you. Include your return address on your letter and include a self addressed, stamped envelope with your request. Request a photocopy of the original record, not a certified extract. The cost is usually the same, but you will get all the information the record contains, not just what will fit on the abstract form. Calculate search dates carefully. Clerks vary in their search policy; some will check the records for a wide range of dates and some will only check a small bracket of years. If the surname is a common one, be as specific as possible. MOST IMPORTANT TIP: Keep your letters brief and to the point! State just the facts. Sorry, but clerks are not interested in your family stories. If you receive an answer that says there is no record, wait a couple of months and try again. Sometime a different clerk knows where certain little-used records have been shelved. If you don't receive an answer, send a courteous reminder, refer to the letter you sent, give the check number and date (if you sent money), briefly restate your request and send another self-addressed, stamped envelope. Your first letter may have gone astray. When a clerk goes out of their way to help you, send a thank-you note. Express appreciation for their help. This will help the genealogist who writes the next letter! ======================================================== TIP OF THE MONTH: Relationships in genealogy can be deceiving. Don't jump to conclusions when you encounter terms of kinship in the old documents. "Brother" may simply mean a brother in church, in a lodge, a husband of a sister or just a term among friends. "Cousin" may refer to someone closely related such as a nephew, niece, uncle, etc. "Senior" or "Junior" may not always be a father and son. It could also mean an uncle and nephew or may simply be a way to distinguish two men of the same name from the same place according to age. Remember that a "junior" may become a "senior" on the death of the elder. ========================================================= COMING EVENTS: July 7-10 The 4th annual Genealogical Institute of Mid America will be held on the campus of the University of Illinois at Springfield; co-sponsored by the Illinois State Genealogical Society. One thing I've been interested in discussing would be adapting the chart program http://www.mids.org/~jsq/chart/ to use as a sort of genealogical database browser. It's fairly easy to make each person box on a chart active in an image map. The question is what to make the active box point to or do. One answer would be to do what these people have apparently done, which is to simply generate another chart. Java does seem to be the obvious interface these days, now that every web browser has it. >Dick Eastman had more information in last week's Genealogy Newsletter > when he quoted from >BroderBund's news release (apparently not yet available on their own Web >site). For that one I get "document contains no data". Has anyone else had any more luck in examining the Broderbund offering? Thanks, John -- John S. Current DOI Prototype participants include Academic Press, Springer-Verlag, Wiley, and others. See . The idea is centered around folk registering documents (or portions of documents) with a central authority and being assigned a doi. Then the doi is published rather than the URL. Browsers use the DOI, which goes to a central server which then redirects one to the current location for the document. The indirection allows one to be directed into a publisher's charging scheme, etc. I don't suspect that changes to lynx will be necessary for this mechanism, but we should be sure to track the work to ensure if it catches on we take full advantage. -- Larry W. Vonner was the only child of Harvey Campbell Stephenson (b. 1831) and Virginia Elizabeth Sweeny (b. 1833) and Harvey was the son of a James and Phebe Stephenson both of Tazwell County, but after that I get stuck. Does anyone possibly have any information on this Stephenson line? Or have any information on Stephensons in Virginia at all? This list was conceived as a technical discussion relating to publishing, indexing, matching, and linking genealogy databases. The archives reflect a healthy discussion during the early days. Lately, however, the messages on the list have tended toward surname research questions and even commercial announcements with fewer technical discussions. This is not to say that the work is not progressing. Many pioneers have contributed to the advancement of the GenWeb. Tim Doyle maintains a growing list of known Web-based genealogy databases at . Gene Stark has improved the GED2HTML program and is running the outstanding GenDex indexing site at And Chris Perry has introduced the GenMatch program that he maintains at to match names on one site with likely names on other sites. According to Gene's index, there are now more than 3 million names in the GenWeb at over 1200 sites. Such numbers certainly qualify the GenWeb as a success. My own writing and "preaching" efforts have not diminished. In the early days, I would post long pieces to the mailing list that generated lively exchanges. I have since found creative outlet in new on-line Web "zines" such as the Journal of Online Genealogy and FamilyTreeMaker Online . Also, the rise of Dick Eastman's weekly newsletter (now at ) and the various mailing lists of the new International Internet Genealogical Society has tended to overshadow our puny efforts at promotion. My professional duties at the university have grown and I have had to fight off intruders who have attempted to take over the lone Unix machine in my stable, the one that hosts the GenWeb site and GenWeb List archives. This one computer has caused more loss of sleep than all the other Novell, Macintosh, and Windows NT servers, which now total 15. If I decide to maintain a Unix box, it will definitely not be flavored Linux. Finally, the outright theft of the name "genweb" by the US (and now World) GENWEB movement has lead to so much confusion and mis-directed message traffic that I have frankly become weary of the effort to keep it straight. By forming the GenWeb Foundation and asserting a trademark in the term "genweb" I thought I was reserving the term for use in describing the concept of linked pedigrees on the Web. The result, however, is that supporters of the GenWeb proposal have declined to use the term (see GenDex and GenMatch) and promoters of an entirely different concept (USGENWEB) have co-opted the term for their own use. I am not relinquishing rights to the term, just shutting down the mailing list. Beginning next week, I will block new subscriptions to the list, then restrict postings, and finally remove names from the list until it includes only a few hardcore programmers and Internet wizards. We will work quitely behind the scenes and publish our work through other channels when it becomes significant. I thank all who have participated. It's been a wild ride. This world is getting more interesting all the time. Cheers, Gary *************************************************************************** *Gary B.
