Introduction to GenWebTM
With the advent of WWW, we now have the tools to create a
coordinated, interlinked, distributed worldwide genealogy
database. This concept has been dubbed "GenWeb." GenWeb is a trademark of The Genweb
Foundation first used to describe the system of linked genealogy databases in April 1994.
To see how GenWeb can be accomplished, read this
Proposal by Gary Hoffman of the Computer Genealogy Society of
San Diego.
If you prefer a slide show, visit the presentation
I gave at the GenTech97
convention in Dallas (rather, Plano) in January 1997. The response was
tremendous and this proposal is already becoming reality.
To see what GenWeb might look like, visit this
GenWeb Demonstration using actual data from my own pedigree.
Examples
Since I first published this proposal, many people have contributed their efforts to create an actual working GenWeb. For example,
- Tim Doyle has compiled a list of various genealogy databases on the World
Wide Web, including many that are in GenWeb format, in his Index of GenWeb Database
Sites.
- Gene Stark has created the GenDex automated, searchable index of GenWeb sites.
- Chris K. Perry is processing online GenWeb data to find possible name matches at his GenMatch service.
- Scott McGee is publishing some terrific GenWeb databases at his GenWeb site.
- And Rex Myer has programmed his version of GenWeb, calling it Webified
Genealogy, or WebGen.
- There are many others, with new ones coming on line every week.
The GenWeb mailing list has been closed. This list operated from September 1994 to August 1997 carrying discussions regarding development of the GenWeb.
The GenWeb
mailing list archive page includes links to archives of the GenWeb mailing list.
